Late Summer in America
Late Summerin America
By David P. Rundle
I refuse to breathe the cooler air and fear
I refuse to hear birds sing and fear
I refuse to face today and tomorow in fear
Fear will not rule me; hope will
I hope with Mary at the cross
I hope with the runaway slave heading North
I hope with the Negroes in Birmingham,
The blacks in Apartheid South Africa,
Cesar Chavez's farm workers
Mother Teresa's sisters
My dying brothers in Baghdad and Afghanistan
We hope in liberty in love
We hope in faith and freedom
We hope in goodness and God
Fear has failed, will fail and is failing now
Breathe deep
Breathe long
Breathe in freedom
Breathe in hope
Breathe in loves
