A pope to follow The Pope

Today's poem:
Pete was brash
Pete was loud
Pete just fished
Pete had no call to be proud

Pete was nothing special
Just an average guy
But he was chosen to lead
Lord only knows why

Lord knows why to be sure
He has a plan
If he can make old Pete a saint
What can he make you, be you woman or man?

Today thoughts:

I jinxed the streak; the Royals won last night. Now, however, they can break
the record for most losses in a season if they just buckle down. We don't want mediorce badness, do we? No, we want historic, epic badness, the type you can tell whippersnapppers about when you are eighty-four and toothless.

Now, on to the pope on Youth Day. I refer to Benedict XVI as the pope and John Paul II as the Pope because JP II was almost a mythic figure. Benedict isn't close to being one, which is no criticism.

Many people, especially in they media, wanted a "sexier" pope, one from Latin America or Africa. They wanted a younger one. They wanted a more liberal one.

So did I.

We got Benedict, an elderly German who was jibes enforcer on matters doctrinal and sexual. We liberals will have to put up with no married priests, no women priests and
no loosening up on birth control for now.

Actually, these are not issues I find that urgent. What???? I am pretty conservative on such matters.

What matters most are issues of peace and war, poverty and social justice. Now, you may say women priests are a matter of social justice. Maybe they are but apparently the Holy Spirit disagrees because He chose Benedict.

Yes, I really believe He did, which brings me to Benedict and Youth Day.

Youth Day was built around JPII, a man who was at heart a pastor and who genuinely liked to be around teenagers and young adults. Benedict is at heart a scholar and has shown no proclivity for people who are wont to pierce their belly buttons and who think reality TV is not an oxymoron. How will the pope do?

Best case is the old guy and the younger crowd hit it off famously. Worst case is they don't. I think the will. The youths who are they have been programmed to like the old guy and the old guy will probably something redeeming in the experience.

And the pope's and my Church will somehow survive and even thrive. That is my hope.
That is my faith. I wouldn't have chosen Peter to be the first Pope. But the Lord did. I trust Him.

Keep hoping.
