Terri and Beyond I
Today's Poem:
What color am I?
Red like Delay?
Blue like Dean?
Both leave me cold.
I refuse a color.
I refuse a label.
I am human.
I am me.
I am brave.
I am free.
Today's thoughts:
If I have brothers and sisters in the disability culture--
Did I say disability culture? What is that? My definition is this: Disability culture is a culture that accepts the fact that we are disabled but complete, whole humans worthy of both giving to and
getting from society. That's my definition and will get you absolutely nothing at Wal-Mart.
--If I have brothers and sisters in the disability culture who speak the loudest for me, they belong to Not Dead Yet. NDY was formed by a group of progressive crips while Jack servicing was going hither and yon whacking terminally ill and people who were just depressed.
Jack became a hero to many but mainly to himself. My brothers and sisters in NDY thought that whacking people with MS and cancer could lead to whacking crips in general. This was not a happy thought.
NDY believes that instead of weeknight crips and terminally ill, we should be doing things like giving crips jobs, decent transportation and good attendant and palliative care.
Many believe euthanasia and assisted suicide laws are progressive. NDY and I demure.
So that's a brief sketch of who NDY is. Tomorrow we'll get to NDY and the Schiavo case. Book mark NDY'S site www.notdeadyet.org and remember:
Keep hoping.
